In 2019, more than 4.5 billion people flew safely are nearly 47 million flights. While many people travel by commercial airline when they’re headed to a far-off destination, this comes bundled with a long list of airport hassles. Crowded terminals, long lines, uncomfortable conditions, and a slow process leaves many individuals avoidant of the whole thing altogether.

There is another way, though. Private jets offer a wonderful alternative that comes with the benefits of speed, comfort, privacy, luxury, and so much more.

How far can a private jet fly, though? Are they suitable for longer journeys?

Let’s take a look at everything you need to know.

How Far Can a Private Jet Fly?

There are so many different benefits to flying on private jets. Not only do you get to fly in luxury, but you can also avoid airline hassles.

One of the most common questions about private jets is: how far can a private jet go?

The short answer is, in most instances, as far as you need to travel. However, you will get into some of the specifics of the matter in the next few paragraphs.

How Does a Private Jet Compare to a Commercial Airline?

If two different planes were leaving the same location and going to the same destination across the country, a private jet will almost always arrive before a commercial airplane. There are two reasons that this is the case.

For one, the average private jet is faster than the average commercial airplane. The cruising speeds of private jets are typically around 604 mph. For a Boeing 747, the cruising speed is 500 mph.

On top of that, there is a lot less time waiting on the ground before takeoff when you use a private jet compared to a commercial airline.

What this means is that private jets make for a more convenient and efficient experience, not to mention a more comfortable one.

The Longest Range of a Private Jet

The private jet range of an aircraft is going to depend on what type of private jet you are flying in.

The Gulfstream G650ER is a private jet that is capable of handling some of the longest international flights. This jet can fly nonstop between Sydney and Dallas as well as Dubai and Atlanta. It can even make a direct flight between the East Coast of the United States and Hong Kong.

This private jet can fit eight passengers. It can comfortably make a trip of around 6,400 nautical miles in one go.

One of the fastest private jets on the market, the Gulfstream G650ER is also one of the most expensive. You can check out some of the world’s dreamiest and most expensive private jets here.

What Are the Average Flight Distances of Private Jets?

Not all private jets are going to be able to make non-stop flights halfway around the world, however.

The flight times can vary by five or more hours depending on the type and size of the jet you are on. Similarly, the flight distances can vary by several thousand miles.

As a reference point, a large cabin jet can usually travel more than 4,000 miles with ten or more hours of flight. On the other hand, a turboprop plane can usually cover somewhere between 1,000 and 1,500 miles over the course of a four to five-hour flight time.

The answer to this question becomes more of a math problem when you start factoring in the weight of cargo, luggage, and passengers, not to mention requirements and restrictions.

Private jets generally have a smaller fuel capacity than commercial planes because they are designed to carry fewer passengers. That being said, these jets can frequently fly around the continental US without having to stop and refuel.

Pilot Rest Requirements

Something else that can impact private jet range is the legal restrictions about how much a pilot can fly. There are strict rules given by the FAA in order to combat crew fatigue related to how many hours a day a pilot can be in flight.

During the day, a pilot can fly no more than nine hours. At night, they can’t fly for more than eight hours.

How Long Do Fuel Stops Take For Private Jets?

If you have to stop for more fuel, it will take on average about 30 minutes. This can actually be a nice opportunity to stretch your legs and use the facilities. If your jet doesn’t have wifi, it’s a good time to catch up on calls and texts, too.

What Type of Jet Is Right For You?

If you are chartering a private jet, you can pick out the jet that best suits your destination and your needs. If it’s your plan to purchase your own jet, you’ll want to consider where you will be traveling most often.

If you are making international trips regularly, you might want a larger aircraft. If you plan on staying within the continental US most of the time, you might find that a small craft is the right fit.

Where Can You Fly Private?

If you’re planning a big trip, you might have been wondering “how far can a private jet fly?” The assumption is that private jets can only go short distances before they have to refuel, adding time to your trip and the inconvenience of waiting around.

Actually, though, private jets can often get you where you want to go. There are a number of different factors that impact how many miles a private jet can fly before needed to refuel, but no matter what you’re looking for you can likely find the right jet for your purposes.
